To George Sterling—

By M. Hoyle

You must have been hard pressed the other day.
The wolves of life so close upon your heel-
Tired...Oh tired in a hopeless way,
Too tired to rest, I know how tired you feel.

And so there came a moment when your heart
(Too numb to cry—and no one by to see)
Failed utterly—no one to say you nay!
And yet, my friend, it doesn't seem to me
That that can be the way.
